Golf Training Schedule for 2009

There are three stages of the game we all need to develop:
Long Game, Short game and Touch around the greens.  I am a great proponent of teaching and emphasizing the short game as a game-improving index. From my experience I score better when my short game is on than when I am bombing long drives down the fairway.  It is also a proven fact that those who train harder on the short game score better that those who spend hours hitting drives in the range.

However, recognizing that we all have different needs when it comes to golf, I am proposing that each player indicate where they need help so that we can customize training for them specifically.  I propose that we meet once a month (the weekend before the tournaments or two weeks before) to work on the various aspects of the game.  The challenge is for all players to drop at least five – ten strokes off their game by the end of the year 2009. It is of course easier for high handicappers to bring their scores lower that say a single digit handicapper to go to scratch.  But we can all drop some scores.

February:  Touch around the Greens
I propose that all golfers work on their game and that we meet once this month for exercises and training on touch around the greens, reading putts etc.  Interested players people can register with me and we can meet one morning (we can agree on venue and date)

March: 100 yards in
This is the shot that even pros dread, the in between club shots that we all face perhaps 14 out 18 times in a round on average.  If you can hit the green 6 out of ten times from 100 yards you are well on your way to being a single digit handicapper

April:  Long game (alignment, swing plane, how to power drives down the fairway)
This requires sound technique, strength training and all those good things but one that can be achieved quickly with proper training.  The long game is essential to leave yourself easy chip/pitch shots to the green for lower scores.

May: Course Management
This is one area that gives us fits. What is it and how does it work? Does it apply to me and when? With proper course Management, the game becomes “easier” as you have laid out a plan of attack. The course is no longer menacing as you have divided it according to your game ability.

June: Putting
We can all use more putting practice but how? How to we read undulating greens? What is the proper technique? Can I hole long putts? What is lagging and how can I improve?  Easy.  Everyone can two putt.

July:  How to prepare for a Tournament & the 2nd Annual Junior Summer Clinics.
