The JC leadership team met last Wednesday and proposed a few tweaks and ideas to our tournaments. Some of the exciting ideas are:

• Closest to Pin and Longest drive holes will be played from the same tee by everyone regardless of handicap (Yes we listen to you).
• Introduction of a closest to the pin pot ($5). All par three holes will be contests and this pot will be divided among the winners.
• Introduction on bonus Rebo points for skills challenges (closest to pin and longest drive) – start date to be determined.
• Drawing at the end of the year to award free membership to members who participate in 10 or more tournaments a year.
• Host a women and kids golf clinic this spring. The clinic will be ran by JC players. This will be one of our annual community outreach programs.
• Host a national tournament similar to one hosted in Pinehurst last October. Dates to be determined.

The day was sunny but windy but the weather sure beat the thunderstorms from previous weekend. Charles McKoy took advantage of the course to nab his first win with a net of 37 stableford points. He was followed closely by Greg Pace and Joel Williams both with 36 points.

Claude Lemite pulled off another double by concuring the water for a 180 yard closest to the pin hole as well as getting the highest gross points of 26 (he’d sure be lethal if he had an official handicap). John Delbeau nabbed the longest drive by a mile…

We’d like recognize the new and renewed members as well as those who

have renewed their handicap with JC. Thank you for!

By popular demand, we will use the stableford format for scoring. This is in effort to 1) continue with advancing the knowledge of golf for our members 2) and most importantly, it will improve the pace of play. The last tournament proved that playing from the right tees matters, we hope that compounded with stableford will help us finish our rounds within 4.5 hours. You can read about the stableford format by clicking on this link or googling it to gain better understanding that will help you strategize for the tournament. Stableford rules are covered in golf rule 32.

Situated amid a beautiful natural setting in the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just north of Atlanta in Woodstock, Georgia, the course at Eagle Watch has the kind of character and power one would expect from its designer, Arnold Palmer.  With fairways surrounded by wooded hills, ponds and creeks add challenge and interest to the layout, this club will almost certainly bring out the best golf in every player.

 

New Membership Rules 2012

As Jamhuri Classic continues it’s 6th year, we have to discuss the importance of membership. We have been very fortunate to continue the tradition of playing monthly tournaments for our members and guests for 64 straight months.

Let’s be realistic, tournaments cost money to organize. There is an expense with trophies, gifts and marketing. We are grateful to our sponsors for covering the majority of the cost of each event. However, our membership dues is what keeps Jamhuri Classic rolling.

Benefits:

• Only members in good standing participate in low net trophy presentation
• Only members in good standing participate in low gross trophy presentation
• Only members in good standing are eligible for Rebo Points
• All members in good standing will start getting additional benefits (Announcements coming soon!)
• You don’t have to be a member to play the tournament
• All players get course rate
• Non members pay an extra $5 cash at the course payable to Jamhuri Classic
• Guests are welcomed at the additional $5
• Membership is $45/year (it’s only $3.75/month)

Belated Happy Jamhuri Day!

He was lost, he was found, he showed up and won it all! None other than one of the JC elder statesmen, Mzee Denys Williams who has maintained his membership in JC even in his absence came back after over a year and took the field by surprise. Denys won with 31 points. Paul Macharia and Greg Pace came a close 2nd and 3rd respectively with the decision coming on count back as both got 30 points. Claude Lemite took home the lowest gross trophy with a gross of 20 points. Paton George claimed the longest drive and Denys Williams again took home the closest to the pin bragging rights.

When you click on the link for the leaderboard, we have included the results based on the stableford points (in Dec ’11 SF tab) and regular scores (Dec ’11). Please note that the initial analysis shows that the use of stableford does not significantly affect the leaderboard. This was our expectation; we will continue to experiment on the format for a few more tournament and make a decision on adopting it permanently in 2012-2013 year if it the trend observed in our first tournament we used it on stands. Please feel free to send us some feedback about your feelings about the changes we are trying to implement!

Creekside 18th green – best finishing hole in Atlanta!

 

Nash Alexander extended the recent first time winner trend on JC tour. Nash handled the cold weather and wind well shooting a net score of 72 to take the November Turkey home. Monthly top five players Tito Mbugua and Tony Chavez had another great showing taking the second and third positions respectively. Tito Mbugua also won the low gross Turkey with a gross score of 86.

Essa Thomas however still holds a firm grip on the Rebo points standing followed closely by Peter Mwaniki and Tony Chavez respecitvely.

The tournament was market with a large number of first or second time guests. Suthan Cobkit, Jerry Scott, Denis Powell, Ansu Badjie, Saif,  Sekou, Eric Laval, Arnold, and Gerald Jennings. Welcome to the Jamhuri.

On a different note, the move by JC to play the tournament from two different tee boxes for different handicap groups proved to be effective. It cut the playing time by 45 minutes from our regular time. In December, we’ll introduce the stableford format which should further improve the playing time and help us wrap the tournaments within 4.5 to 5 hours consistently.

Peter Mwaniki pulled a tri-factor during the September tournament at Mystery Valley. Mr. Mwaniki earned his first victory on the Jamhuri Classic Circuit. In addition, he went home with the longest drive (how did that happen?) and closest to the pin awards. This is believed to be the first time the same person won the overall trophy as well as the two skill challenges! Congratulations Mr. Mwaniki.

Kudos to Daniel ‘JD’ Katumo for winning the lowest gross trophy by a mile. Also of note is that a new member Essa Thomas ranked 3rd and Joel William came 2nd. Congratulations!

Seven players traveled to Alabama on September 10th and represented Jamhuri Classic. We’re grateful for those who took their time and flew the JC flag all the way.
